Beyond the Mere Walls and Books: A Year in Coop Academy

One thing I forgot to mention in this space is that I’ve been gaining experience in classroom teaching since 2021. It started when I resumed studying and acquired my teaching certification as the pandemic continued, and I realized it would be good for my curriculum vitae if I actually tried classroom teaching.

Now, this particular workplace isn’t exactly my first experience. It’s more like the most remarkable one, at least until I get my next experience (which hopefully happens abroad, praying and manifesting).

It started around May 2024, when a close friend of mine had been asking me to try doing a demo class here because of their need for a faculty member that can handle ABM subjects. For a brief context, this specialization is for senior high school students who are inclined to do business and management courses in universities. I declined at first, given my already-hectic schedule as an ESL teacher, a graduate student, and a mom.

But alas, fate happened. One of my best friends was scheduled to have a demo and she asked me to accompany her. Since I’ll be going with her, my close friend who’s working there told me that I might as well try, too. Realizing the frequency of this opportunity coming up, I decided to take a leap of faith.

With His grace, I was able to ace the demo, and I immediately started working a few days later.

My first few weeks were ordinary. I was just a meek newbie who rarely mingled with her colleagues. My routine only circled from the office to the classroom and back, then I’d sometimes drop by the guidance office to have chitchats with my close friends there.

At least until October 18th, 2024.

It was the career guidance day. The event was hosted by the guidance office, and I was tasked to be the emcee. At the time, no one, except my close friends, had an idea about my public speaking skills. I just basically did what I had to do on that day, and that’s how I instantly became the campus’ resident events host.

Rekindling my love for hosting and public speaking is one of the best highlights of my teaching stint. This institute made me realize that I am indeed more than what I think I am and that there’s so much more for me to do than just merely staying within the classroom’s four walls. My colleagues trusted me and my skills, and little did I know that this push is exactly what I needed to finally nourish and become a good steward of my talent.

When I hosted the institute’s intramurals

Such acceptance helped me become more capable of rooting for others, too. Within a short period, I was able to build good relationships with the circle whom I now consider as the best colleagues I’ve worked with throughout my academic journey. This circle is like a fortress I can rely on, given our diverse skill sets. Together, we’ve achieved so much for the institute and our students, fulfilling our sworn duty as educators. Beyond that, we’ve also shared a bond that will surely transcend into becoming each other’s valuable connection in this industry and in life, generally.

This journey wouldn’t also be complete without the kids from the accountancy, business, and management (ABM) strand. They made this learning journey a beautiful two-way street and I surely had a blast navigating life with them. Being with them for a whole academic year made me realize that life isn’t surely just about being book-smart; it’s about how this knowledge manifests in different situations, and my kids are exemplary in doing that.

Words aren’t enough to describe the blast I had with these kids. To say that they surely did astounding things is an understatement; these brave-hearted souls truly have what it takes to thrive in this strand. This gives me the assurance that as they forge their own path, they’ll surely be able to figure life out. I am so proud to be part of their learning and growth, and I am rooting for them as they navigate towards their respective successes in the future.

It’s been a week since my contract ended but my sepanx is undeniable. The way this institute became a platform and a safe space for me to explore and hone my talents, and my solace as I navigated through my life’s dark times… I am indeed grateful to God that He allowed me to be here. As I pursue greener pastures, I can certainly say that there will always be a special space for this institute and that I will always stop by this place, hug my friends, and always express my gratitude.

What’s even sweeter is that I ended my stint here by hanging out with my colleagues. We shared tons of laughter along with good food and memories worth cherishing. They even did a surprise tribute for me and Teacher Mea, which was really heartwarming. One thing is for sure, this bond doesn’t end here. As they said before I rendered my final biometric entry, we will see each other soon.

It’s an honor to be ‘Teacher Winwin’ to Coop Academy’s constituents. Daghang salamat (thanks a lot) and until then!
